Must Read: Mobile Trends

Some useful new data.

A few things stand out here:

  • Teens are text messaging like crazy.
  • This level of texting makes me think that it’s so close to actual chat, that mobile “chat” is going to become bigger.  Or normalized.  I do know at least one person who refuses to text and uses Google Chat.  Developers, keep this in mind – and social media companies may want to move towards mobile chat (also, keep that in mind).
  • Phones are beng used less for actual phone calls.  This is a trend that reminds me of how cable companies became ISPs.  At this rate mobile phone companies are really “mobile” companies.  Keep that in mind for the future – and for regulation.
  • There’s an impressive generation gap here in text and phone usage.  How are we going to market and to whom?
Mobile is becoming mobile period, and the generation gap is impressive.

Ritholz comes through with this infographic that you just have to see.

There’s a lot to read over and to think about, but here’s some takeaways from my thoughts:

  • Everything is going mobile.  That means your website (personal or profssional) needs to be mobile, your projects need to keep mobile in mind, and that doing geek stuff mobile is great practice.
  • Everything is going social, so you need to as well.  Twitter, Facebook, whatever.
  • On a side note, I’m wondering what the role of traditional RSS is going to be.  I’m not sure, to be frank.  I suspect email newsletters may be a big thing.
  • Everyone is going mobile, including businesses.  This is a pretty rapid transition, and it means that if you jump on mobile you’re going to be ahead of the game.  If you’re a developer, learn to develop in mobile, if you’re in marketing, you get the idea.
  • Consumer engagement is a big factor here – people do their research in stores.  What this means for online shopping also intrigues me – people are used to the online experience and are porting it elsewhere.
  • All this move to mobile can’t last in my opinion.  At some point “mobile” will just merge into “internet stuff” so what we see now is going to change and evolve anyway.
  • I see big opportunities for developers, marketers, and analysts here.

Late Breaking Geekery

A few important items

Sony may pull it's music from iTunes, and it's game ideas appear to be a way to compete with Apple.  Of course as we saw Apple is looking into games.  This sounds like a suicidal move on Sony's part, but makes some sense if they want their own ecosystem.

A look at why Nokia's plans with Microsoft may not solve its problems.  I agree the organizational choices don't sound prime, it sounds like splitting to try and get the best out of all markets – with no unified strategy.  I'm starting to think Microsoft is taking advantage of Nokia.
