Jukepop: Serial Fiction Reloaded?

Jukepop Serials is building the ‘go to’ site for authors and readers of Slipstream, Steampunk, Fantasy, Paranormal, Sci-Fi, Dystopian, Crime, Mystery, Thriller, and Cross-Genre fiction.

via Jukepop – About Us.

Aside from just publishing stuff in serial fashion, the site’s also planning to use a “tipping” scheme, where readers can reward the most compelling work published in a given month. The pay isn’t great — 2¢ a word for up to 5K words — but their publishing terms are non-exclusive, which is nice to know if you plan to republish the work on your own elsewhere.

The site’s still in pre-launch phase, but if you have a story you’ve been considering serializing on your blog, this place might be worth a look. I’ve signed up myself and may well have something to serialize for them in time.

Huh. This is pretty much how I’ve been publishing for the past ten months. (Serializing and making it up as I go, that is.) Also kind of how webcomics work, albeit with more graphics. This seems savvy… I wonder, will they be making their money from advertising? Subscribers?

I suspect ads will be inevitable. Maybe they’ll have some kind of tiered subscription thing (read the new installments when they come out first!), a la what Crunchyroll does for paid vs. free accounts.

Gregory, just quickly– are you getting paid for your serializing? I have been looking for the sort for quite some time. thanks. -dc

If you can, please email me. Thanks Greg. dc@designby-dc.com

They’re on the right track for sure, I love their site, nice open, no bells and whistles, very attractive. I even looked up the designer. I look forward to working with them. -dc

I may have to look into this.  It’d be a great way to bombard people with all the various stuff I’ve been up to as of late.  ^_^

I like serials, but I’m very, very leery of their intent to only pay for their most popular content. It’s disingenuous at best and exploitative at worst. The literary tradition of 19th-century serials they mention was based around paying every author for every word, every time–the opposite of this setup.
